The beauty of material change.
We are dynamic(characterised by constant change or activity) in thought and in action, thus our interactions with materials evaluate and measure more than just static qualities.

Schedule:
Start Lab Monday 6th – Post before 11:59pm Thursday 9th

Aim:
To investigate material activation and change. These often occur as an interaction between; people, materials, or elements. This is not searching for wear as in lab 4 but more active changes.

Materials:
Become the detective and explore for material activity in your everyday environment, search for dynamic interactions that are recordable by photography. Examples are water boiling, a steaming tea bag, cloud movement, window dew.

Method:
Look closely for material movement or a change in dimensional or visual qualities. Your presence may have created this change, alternately an external activity e.g. the sun or electricity. This activity could occur over long periods of time or almost instantly. Rather than physically forcing these dynamic activities see if you can just initiate them (start them off).

You must identify a change that can be recorded with your camera in a series of photos (Five shots are required). When composed these should aim to tell a ‘time’ based story similar to frames in a movie film.

Compile these ‘five shots’ (using your own creativity in composition‐ additionally in this lab use text and graphics) into ONE image to publish on Flickr.

Remember! Work to get the ‘best story’ that communicates the quality of material change. (These Photographs may be incapable of being taken in the photo studio, but try to control the lighting and background). Try using the ‘macro setting’ on your camera to get in close; additionally remember about light and shadow.

Result:
Note; as in other Labs the image you publish should be a finely crafted composition of your subject. Be careful not to overwork the composition to a point where the experiment or clarity of communication is lost.

Publish:
Submit ONE correctly ordered and named images to FLICKR, DSDN141 group pool.
Name submission image as follows: lastname_firstname_lab5

LAB 5 - Jean Tinguely

LAB 5 - Jean Tinguely

LAB 5

LAB 5

LAB 5 - Arthur Ganson

LAB 5 - Arthur Ganson

LAB 5

LAB 5

LAB 5

LAB 5

LAB 5

LAB 5

Project 2 Guide

Project 2 Guide

Photo

LAB 4 - WEAR

Wear what wear. Understanding material qualities though wear

Schedule:

Start Lab Monday 9th – Post before 11:59pm Thursday 12th

Aim:

To investigate how materials react to human interaction (use). How the process and results of
interaction communicate material properties, qualities, and new values through physical
change.

Materials:

Start by exploring for traces of wear on the many products, objects, and materials we ‐ as
people interact with every day.

Method:

On looking closely material changes will be apparent, in some way your presence will have
created change. This could be over long periods or almost instantly.

You must be searching for human induced wear in an object rather than ‘just making
something look worn for the Lab’.

Now, look carefully. While these changes will relate to the physical properties i.e. colour,
scratches, fading, they additionally influence the qualities and object’s value.

Photograph. Select only one object and tell a story. Work to get the ‘best 4 images’ that
communicate the quality of wear (Photograph in either the photo studio or somewhere you
can control lighting and background). Try using the ‘macro setting’ on your camera to get in
close; additionally remember about light and shadow.

Finally use photo‐shop to create a ‘4 in 1’ final image. This is one image composed of 4 equal
segments each containing a different ‘angle/viewpoint’ of one objects wear. Then post.

Result:

Note; as in other Labs the image you publish should be a finely crafted composition of you
subject. Be careful not to overwork the composition to a point where the experiment or clarity
of communication is lost.

Publish:

Submit only ONE correctly named image to your FLICKR, DSDN141 group pool. Lab 4

Name submission image as follows: lastname_firstname_lab4.

LAB 4

LAB 4

LAB 4

LAB 4

LAB 4

LAB 4

LAB 4

LAB 4

LAB 4

LAB 4
