LAB 4 - WEAR
Wear what wear. Understanding material qualities though wear
Schedule:
Start Lab Monday 9th – Post before 11:59pm Thursday 12th
Aim:
To investigate how materials react to human interaction (use). How the process and results of
interaction communicate material properties, qualities, and new values through physical
change.
Materials:
Start by exploring for traces of wear on the many products, objects, and materials we ‐ as
people interact with every day.
Method:
On looking closely material changes will be apparent, in some way your presence will have
created change. This could be over long periods or almost instantly.
You must be searching for human induced wear in an object rather than ‘just making
something look worn for the Lab’.
Now, look carefully. While these changes will relate to the physical properties i.e. colour,
scratches, fading, they additionally influence the qualities and object’s value.
Photograph. Select only one object and tell a story. Work to get the ‘best 4 images’ that
communicate the quality of wear (Photograph in either the photo studio or somewhere you
can control lighting and background). Try using the ‘macro setting’ on your camera to get in
close; additionally remember about light and shadow.
Finally use photo‐shop to create a ‘4 in 1’ final image. This is one image composed of 4 equal
segments each containing a different ‘angle/viewpoint’ of one objects wear. Then post.
Result:
Note; as in other Labs the image you publish should be a finely crafted composition of you
subject. Be careful not to overwork the composition to a point where the experiment or clarity
of communication is lost.
Publish:
